Weed Re-growth Claims Refuted by Ohio State University Research

October, 2007

Kansas City, Missouri – PBI/Gordon Corporation was pleased to see Ohio State University research refuting rumors claiming decreased control on weeds treated with the company’s SpeedZone® products. D. S. Gardner, in an article published in Ohio State’s TurfNews 1, states that “In trials conducted at the OTF Research Center, this has never been observed.”

Doug Obermann, Product Manager for PBI/Gordon’s professional turf herbicides, says he knew that the rumors were unfounded. “Over 250 potential formulations were tested to obtain the optimum ratio of components to assure maximum speed and control,” said Obermann. “We worked with this active [carfentrazone] for several years before the products were introduced and did not see the rumored regrowth.”

The rumor assumed that the protox inhibitor killed weed tissue before the 2,4-D, MCPP and dicamba could be effectively translocated throughout the plant for actual control. This phenomenon has been seen with other chemistries which ‘burn back’ weeds, without actually killing them. Not so with products containing carfentrazone. “In fact,” says Gardner, “these herbicide combinations [SpeedZone, PowerZone® and SpeedZone Southern] result in at least 95% weed control without grow-back for at least 90 days following a spring application. Additionally, the time for complete weed control is 14 days, compared to 28 days for most other broadleaf herbicides.” Ohio State No Regrowth Statement

“These products smoke tough weeds like clover and dandelions in about a week,” reports Obermann. “Visual results are obvious in 24 hours or less. Clover has been wiped out without a trace in less than a week,” continued Obermann.

Another unique feature of SpeedZone is cool-weather performance. The product actually performs faster in cooler weather. “It’s a great product for early spring and late fall,” said Obermann. The product gives exceptional cool-weather weed control with application temperatures of 40 degrees F. “It’s rain-fast in three hours and customers will get to see the result of late fall applications because of the phenomenal speed of the product,” continues Obermann.

Carfentrazone is classified as a reduced risk pesticide by the EPA. SpeedZone, PowerZone (contains MCPA instead of 2,4-D) and SpeedZone Southern are low odor formulations and have a CAUTION signal word.
