Surge®, New Fast-Acting Water-Based Weed Control

November 1, 2004

Kansas City, Missouri -- PBI/Gordon Corporation has received EPA acceptance for a new water-based broadleaf herbicide formulation containing the active ingredient sulfentrazone for use in turf on November, 2004.

The new combination product will be called Surge Broadleaf Herbicide for Turf, and will be marketed under Gordon's ProFormT brand with a new blue checked flag label. "Sulfentrazone is a newly approved protox inhibitor for control of weeds in turfgrass," said Doug Obermann, Product Manager for Gordon's professional products. "Users will see a similar response with this new water-based product as with SpeedZone®," Obermann said. "The weeds turn brown, dry up and blow away."

"Surge offers the economy and ease of use of a water-based amine formulation, so we feel it has a definite fit in the industry, especially with LCOs," Obermann reported. "They'll still see visual results in 24 to 48 hours and dead weeds in about two weeks." Obermann stated that the new product is particularly good in warmer weather and excels in control of summer weeds such as spurge, knotweed, oxalis and dandelion.

The new formulation is designed for use on residential and commercial turf. Adding phenoxy actives and dicamba broadens the weed control spectrum and adds systemic activity to the contact activity of sulfentrazone for multiple modes of action. "Surge is a great product for late spring, early summer and fall," said Obermann. The product gives exceptional warm-weather weed control with application temperatures of 90° F with no decrease in speed or efficacy. It's rain fast in six hours and has a 3 week reseeding interval. "Combining all these benefits in a low odor formulation gives turf managers something new for their summer weed control programs," states Obermann.
